FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Question: What kind of people do you wish to read your book?

Answer:  This book is for empaths.  One in five Japanese people is born with at least one type of gift as an empath.  (In the West, it's 1 in 20 people who are empaths.) 

Question: What is an empath?

Answer:  An empath has at least one significant, trainable gift for directly  experiencing what it is like to be another person.  That gift could be intellectual, emotional, physical, spiritual, environmental, animal, crystal, plant, etc.  Not all empaths are alike.  But the techniques I've developed are designed to work for you whatever kind of empath you are.

Question: If I'm an empath, will I know it?

Answer:  Probably not.  Many people don't even know the term.  This new book is the first in Japanese to define it, then help people use their gifts on purpose.  From my research, I have come to believe that the only way a person can have such a gift is for it to be encoded in your aura from birth.  This is unlike a skill you might develop later on.  It's more like having a digestive system, a very basic aspect of being human.

Question: If empathic gifts are so natural, why need to develop skill?

Answer: Not every natural ability is convenient.  Sometimes I joke with my students that what I teach is a bit like potty training. The ability to eliminate waste matter is natural, necessary also.  But think what life would be like if nobody had discovered potty training.  Pretty messy!  Early in your life, you learned how to have control over these natural functions, and then life became a lot simpler.  Empaths need training as well, to be able to decide, "Now or later," rather than having the experience leak all over the place!

Question: Why does it matter if I am an empath?

Answer:  You have both a problem and an opportunity.  The problem is that if you are merely talented, not skilled, you constantly pick up pain that belongs to other people and it goes into your aura, to be a part of you when it does not need to be.  So unskilled empaths suffer without knowing why.  Often they secretly worry about being defective, e.g., neurotic, too sensitive, weak, immature or crazy. 

Here's an example: If you know a hypochondriac, for instance, in many cases (not all) that person is simply an unskilled empath with a gift called Physical Oneness, where he experiences what is going on with other people's bodies as if it were his body.  Being called a hypochondriac is no fun, nor is it enjoyable to keep feeling like he is sick, yet doctors say he is not.  My book offers a solution.

Question: So what is the opportunity you describe in your book?

Answer:  When an unskilled empath learns skills, it can be life changing.  Unnecessary suffering stops.  It is easier to serve others, yet feel good alone at the end of the day.  Self-esteem changes enormously when you discover that something you thought was a weakness really is a sacred gift and that you are not just healthy but talented.  I have often heard from my readers and students that, more than other things they have studied, the knowledge in this book is life changing. 

Question: What intention do you think they need to have while reading your book?

Answer:  It's like going on a treasure hunt.  Explore!  Find out if you really do have the treasure-in this case, having one or more gifts as an empath.  Then find the treasure as a matter of direct experience.  Explore the techniques in the book.  They have been tested on many readers and students.  You won't find them elsewhere and they really do work.  Unfortunately, skills that people DO try for "over-sensitivity" usually don't work well.  If that has happened to you, don't be discouraged.  That doesn't mean anything is wrong with you, but instead that you haven't had a teacher yet who really knew how to work with empaths.

Question: Can you give an example of something that doesn't work for empaths?

Answer: Many people have been told that they need to work on their boundaries.  "Don't be too sensitive.  Distance yourself.  Put up a wall, if necessary." 

Walls don't work for anyone, empaths or non-empaths.  Habitual emotional walls actually show up in auras, and what also shows (for an empath) is pain from other people that has come seeping in.  That pain, like walls, can be released, fortunately.

As for distancing yourself, "working on your boundaries," etc., this is an approach commonly advocated by psychologists.  If someone suffers from Retired Husband Syndrome, for example, this may be suggested to them..

Unfortunately, results are mixed.  For non-empaths, remember, monitoring personal boundaries can work.  But for non-empaths, it simply won't make a significant difference.

When I teach, I take surveys about this.  Consistently, students of mine have tried to consciously give themselves boundaries, but it doesn't keep out the pain, fear, or other experiences they feel from having contact with others.  But my techniques do.

Question: So what do you offer in your book that does work?

Answer: The techniques involve using your consciousness, or spiritual awareness.  You learn to wake it up particularly with a technique called "Coming Home."  You discover deep things about who you really are, and I think this may be especially helpful for my Japanese readers because of the cultural emphasis on being considerate of others.  Think of it as a way to become deeply considerate of YOURSELF, in a way that nobody else can do for you, any more than another person, however well intended, could help you to breathe or to circulate the blood within your body.

Question: Can you give an example of what it means to have a technique work for turning empathy OFF?

Answer: I taught one of my students about Holding a Space (something described in the book).  She told me afterwards, "I'm 46 years old.  This is the first time in my life that I can remember being in a room with another person and being able to pay attention to myself."

Question: What are the main results that readers can expect from Empowered by Empathy? 

Answer:

• You'll find out if you are an empath (and anyone curious enough to look inside this book probably is). 

• You'll learn precisely which gifts you have.

• You'll receive a framework for understanding how these gifts work -- a spiritually-based model about consciousness, rather than a psychologically-based model that relates to behavior and emotions.

• You'll learn easy, efficient ways to turn your empathy OFF most of the time. 

• You'll learn equally easy, powerful techniques to turn your empathy ON, for greater learning and service. 

• You'll learn how to develop the lifestyle of a skilled empath, including a new understanding about GROUNDING that is extremely practical.

Question: Why would someone want to turn empathy ON?

Answer: One reason is fun.  I call it the biggest fun a grownup can have with your clothes on!  A seeker of truth will be amazed at all you can learn about people.  It is a profound way to help others more.  And the way my techniques are set up, you are completely protected from taking on other people's pain.  The experience is clean, not messy.

Question: If you're already considerate of other people, how would that be different from what you teach for turning empathy ON?

Answer: Manners can be formalities.  Manners can even be used without any real acknowledgement of how a person feels inside.  Even with good intentions, people tend to think everyone else is "just like me."  Really, everyone is wildly different, truly and deeply unique.  An  empath can explore this, then emerge from the experience with the ability to be considerate in a way that transcends mere politeness.

Question: Any other reason to turn empathy ON?

Answer: When you use techniques in this book, you will be able to have direct experience of other people by choice--even from a photograph on the Internet or in a newspaper.  Find out from the inside what it is really like to be one of your heroes.  What is that new business associate really like?  Or, if you're dating, preview that date and, possibly, save yourself disappointment later on!
